Dear Editor;
It’s quite ironic that citizens of the city of Georgetown constantly blame the Mayor and City Council and the Government for the untidy state of our environment.
These same people still choose to litter whether at a routine lime at the seawalls or the regular improper disposal of domestic waste on the roadside, in the trenches or the sides of them or even in our cemeteries.
We are all grown people and we need to set an example for the younger generation. As the saying goes; ‘Monkey sees! Monkey does!’
We cannot be littering and expecting the local authorities to be cleaning up behind us at our every whim because the fact is, it is impossible and there is only so much the Town Council can do on a limited budget and we as citizens of the Garden City need to take up some of the burden and play our role in keeping the City Clean through self-help and being responsible with the disposable of our garbage.
We can come together with our neighbours or local Lions Club or any other non-profit organization and make a difference by organizing a clean up exercise and making “relaxercise” a ritual.
Simple actions such as placing a food box or other eating utensils in a bin or keeping it in your possession if a bin is not nearby can go a far way in keeping our environment clean.
Matter of fact, this can be practiced across Guyana! Make it a Habit! Take time to care and educate individuals on the ill effects of littering. ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness!’ I grew up hearing those words repeatedly drummed into my ears.
Citizens of Guyana, it is time to hold God in a Deep Embrace!
