As part of a continuing programme, “Self-reliance and success in business’, aimed at lifting women to becoming successful business personalities, a workshop the likes of which was held previously in a number of Regions,
has now been brought to Region Two.
The five-day workshop was officially opened on Monday by First Lady Sandra Granger in the boardroom of the Regional Democratic Council office.
Ms Granger told women of Region Two that after she had assumed the duties of First Lady, helping women to become confident and independent was an area on which she wanted to focus and although her office has a limited budget to work with, she has been getting funding in part with the Ministry of Social Protection, Interweave Solutions, the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs and also the Ministry of Business.
Mrs. Granger said similar workshops were held in Regions One, Four, Five, Eight, Nine and Ten. She added that data shows that if a man succeeds he would take himself but if a woman suceeds; she would take her entire family with her.
Mrs. Granger assured the women who attended the workshop in Region Two that she has high hopes for them. Mrs. Granger also told the women that they would become better business folks. The workshop was for their independence and self reliance, she added
Yohann Sanjay Pooran, the facilitator encouraged women to believe in themselves and to be confident. He also called on them to create a support body in the interest of remaining relevant in their varying businesses.
“Know your skills, we will teach you a business plan to assist you to earn a living.”
Meanwhile, Region Two Regional Executive Officer, Rupert Hopkinson, said that it is a workshop that would journey women to good economic success.
Hopkinson stated that the workshop was a part of the development of the good life which makes the journey more deliberate.
Among those participating in the workshop are Lieutenant Colonel Yvonne Smith, Member of Parliament, Hemraj Rajkumar, Yohann Sanjay Pooran, Dharul Khan, Ms.Doreen Duncan, Leonard Bunbar, and REO, Rupert Hopkinson.
Marina Calistro, who has a business in craft, says her family is showing interest in looking at converting the skin of animals to artifacts and craftwork. Women who are into catering, poultry, clothes business and preserves were among the attendees.
The participants of the programme would receive a certificate which would enable them to access small loans and also be recognized as bona fide business women.
