Dear Editor;
I was surprised to open some of the popular dailies recently only to be confronted with a large full colour paid advertisement taken out by the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown and signed by the Town Clerk Royston King giving all property owners in Georgetown’s central business district 14 days to connect all pipes to the sewerage system as opposed to the city’s alleyways and street drains.
I have not seen such profligate, reckless and decadent behavior by a municipality in a long time by a municipality. Why for such a short and routine message was a large advertisement needed. Why was there need for such pointless and colourful graphics in the ad taking up most of it? Why was there need for it in colour. Indeed why was there need at all for this advertisement at all?
If the Building Inspectors and the Sanitary Inspectors were doing their jobs properly, or at all, then they would have ensured that every new building would have had all such number of water closets, urinals, sinks, bath wastes or other sanitary conveniences in accordance with the regulations.
This excessive advertising could only be seen as the Town Clerk trying to appear to be working diligently or to divert the citizen’s attention from all of the recent indiscretions of the Council including harassing the vendors, making a complete mess of the Kitty Market rehabilitation, refusal to have a thorough forensic audit done of its finances, the notorious parking meter fiasco and so much more.
How could a cash strapped City Council, allow the Town Clerk and PRO to so glibly waste the property owners money like that? This lavish and improvident behavior by irresponsible officers at the Council must be stopped now.
