Vedanand Chander, 37, of No71 village, Corentyne Berbice who is on trial in the Berbice High Court on a charge of attempted murder before Justice Jo Ann Barlow and a mixed jury, has denied committing the act.
The man is accused of attempting to kill Chabbidat Tejram, 35 of No 71village on October 16, 2012. The incident occurred following a ‘name calling incident’, at No 71 Village, Corentyne.
State Prosecutor Stacy Goodings is presenting the state’s case.
Attorneys at law Mursalene Bacchus and Perry Gossai are representing the defendant.
The state had closed its case while the defence had opted to call two witnesses. Only one came forward.
The accused had given an unsworn statement from the dock in which he denied the accusation.
He denied calling anyone a false name and had stated that it was the defendant who had pelted him. He stated they became embroiled in an argument which led to a scramble. They both fell to the ground and he received injuries to his elbow.
He could say how Tejram got injured.
According to the state’s case, Tejram was at the front of his yard at No71 village when the accused, who was riding a bicycle, passed and said something to him. He responded. The man then told Tejram he was coming back. He allegedly returned with a chisel, which he used to injure Tejram under his armpit.
The prosecution called a number of witnesses, including Latchmanarine Ramsundar, a Neighbourhood policeman who testified that on the day in question he was patrolling within in the No 71 area when he saw a crowd.
He made inquiries and observed that Tejram was holding a cloth to his armpit.
The accused was nearby with a chisel in his hand. He collected the chisel and handed them over to the police. Both men were taken to the Springlands Police Station.
Dr. Ryan Campbell testified to treating Tejram at the Springlands Hospital. During his examination he saw a stab wound on the victim in the region of his arm pit.
Police Officer Troy Munroe uplifted the medical certificate, which he tendered into evidence.
Police Detective Corporal Terry Cummings in his testimony stated that he arrested the accused at the Springlands Police Station, when he put the allegation to him.
The man had responded by saying that “Officer, I don’t know wah going on.” Chabbidat was also at the station, where he had gone to make a report. He was subsequently taken to the Skeldon Hospital and was later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
Tajeram in his evidence stated around 18:00 hrs on the day in question he was at the front of his yard when the accused, who was riding a bicycle passed and called him ‘deportee’ and said he would be back. He said the accused returned with a chisel which he used to bore Tajram under his arm pit. After he was stabbed he fell to the ground.
Tajeram had denied calling the accused “a waste man”, but maintained that the accused called him a “Deportee”. He also denied pelting the accused with a concrete brick, or attacking him at any time.
