-GCB Jaguars 3-day League
By Sean Devers
A lackluster performance by East Bank, who floored at least 12 catches, allowed West Berbice to reach 407-9 by the close of the opening day of the fifth round of the GCB Jaguars Three-Day Franchise League yesterday at the Enterprise ground on the East Coast of Demerara.
In a bottom of the table clash, number 10 batsman Keyron Fraser smashed seven sixes and six fours in an entertaining unbeaten 120 from 137 balls and 170 minutes to set the Enterprise ground on fire on a placid track and blistering hot day.
The 2008 National U-19 pacer joined the solid Andrew Dutchin at 13:52hrs, with West Berbice, blown away for 30 in Canje, in a precarious position at 188-8 and the pair added 145 runs for the ninth wicket before Dutchin departed at 333-9.
The 22-year-old Dutchin charged down the track to Steffon Browne and was skillfully stumped by West Indies U19 Keeper Tevin Imlach as he threw his wicket when 29 away from what would have been a matured and responsible century. His 71 lasted 234 minutes, 187 balls and included four boundaries.
Fraser, who celebrated his 26th birthday on September 21, then featured in an unfinished 74-run last wicket partnership with Collis Butts who ended a frustrating day for East Bank, on 27.
Opener, 20-year-old Avishkar Sewkarran had earlier struck eight boundaries in an even 50 from 106 minutes and 68 balls and put on 44 for the first wicket with Leon Andrews (18) before off-spinner Steven Jacobs removed Andrews and Raffael Estraido (9) in quick succession to end the day with 3-99 from 26 overs. Ali (2-65 from 12 overs) & Browne (2-39 from 14 overs) supported Jacobs.
Ali, already with a seven-haul in the League, got rid of Sewkarran and Brentnol Woolford (29) to leave the Berbicians on 139-4 from 41 overs by Lunch despite putting down six catches.
After the interval Sherwin McPherson (20) was sent back by pacer Stephon Harris and when Kevin Jawalir (3) fell to Browne without addition to the score West Berbice were 146-6 with Dutchin slowing finding his rhythm.
Steffon Adams (17) was bowled by Jacobs and Barrington Mitchell (13) had his stumps knocked out by Budhan Baksh at 188-8 and despite their sloppy fielding, East Bank were in a strong position to deny West Berbice any batting points.
But Fraser walked to the crease with Dutchin on 23 and his innings had no dawn but began at high noon. Fraser got off the mark with a bullet-like straight drive off Jacobs while Dutchin, keen to use his feet to the spinners, danced into Sagar Hathiramani and lofted him for four.
Fraser dumped Ali for six and continued to go after the bowling; hammering Jacobs down the ground for four as the level-handed Dutchin showed excellent temperament and was content to play the supporting role.
Fraser was given caught behind by Umpire Baker when the ball had clearly touched the ground before Imlach took it and she had to rescind the decision.
Dutchin sweetly tucked National U-19 seamer Sherfane Rutherford off his legs to reach his 50 from 147 balls with just two fours before spanking the seamer for a delightful boundary.
The lively pacer peppered the batsmen with bouncers on the placid track causing Fraser to fend one awkwardly off his throat. But the slimly built right-hander opted to the fight fire with fire and a pugnacious hook raced for four and the decent size crowd loved it.
A towering six off Jacobs brought up Fraser’s 50 from 79 balls with four fours and two sixes before he clobbered the expensive Ali for six to move to 71 and go past Dutchin, who suffering from cramps and was soon stumped.
Fraser galloped into the nineties with a couple of sixes off Ali and reached his first ever century from 116 balls decorated six fours and five sixes. He found the perfect partner in Butts, the son of former Test off-spinner Clyde Butts.
Butts batted positively and by the end of the day the Region Five Franchise had eclipsed the 382 made by Lower Corentyne at Tuschen and had already bagged four batting points.
Butts and Fraser (who joined four others with centuries in the League) will hope to set another record today when play is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs since the last wicket pair is just 26 runs away from a three-figure stand.
East Bank only have themselves to blame for the position that they are in since their body language and substandard fielding never suggested they had not turned up to play serious cricket.
