Photos and components of a firearm allegedly recovered from the scene of the murder of Berbice businessman Shameer Ali -Mursalin have been tendered as evidence in the Preliminary Inquiry, (PI) which continued at Springlands
Magistrate’s Court, yesterday.
Mursalin, called ‘Kazac,’ a trader, of Grant 1805 Weld Tank Dam, Crabwood Creek, Berbice Corentyne, in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), was fatally shot to the head following a longstanding dispute with a fellow businessman, on October 24, 2015.
Berbice businessman Dennis Veerasammy called “Giggles” and two of his employees, Basheer Harrinauth and Delroy Fraser, called “Bully Boy “were later arrested and charged with the murder. The trio is currently before the court for the murder.
The case attracted media attention after it was reported that Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh had allowed the main witness, (Rocky Profitt), to testify without permitting him to review the evidence or sign his deposition.
This took place in mid-August. Kaieteur News has been following the matter ever since.
Yesterday, the photos and firearm components were tendered by Police Constable Chris Herber, who was among the witnesses to appear. He took the stand to continue his evidence in the PI which was conducted at the Regional Democratic Council, (RDC) building at Springlands, East Corentyne Berbice.
The police officer and the sister of the deceased, Tameshwarie Kishore know as “Sunita”, were called to testify before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh yesterday. Kishore was later cross examined by Attorney Chandra Sohan, who is representing the number one accused, Dennis Veerasammy.
The witness was asked to return court for further cross examination by Mr. Sohan and an attorney who is yet to enter an appearance on behalf of the other two accused.
Jagdeo Ramdass, another witness was also scheduled to continue giving evidence yesterday. The matter was however adjourned until October 6.
On a previous occasion, the main witness, Rocky Profitt was also ordered to return to court for further cross-examination in the matter.
However, when he and the other witnesses turned up, they were informed that the court proceeding would be postponed because of concerns raised by Magistrate Singh over the physical conditions of the Springlands Magistrate’s Court. The building has allegedly been infested with bats for some time. Therefore the court proceedings were transferred to the RDC building, located a few doors away from the Springlands court.
Profitt is also scheduled to be cross examined by the attorney representing the two other accused persons, Basheer Harrinauth and Delroy Fraser yesterday. But neither the witness (Profitt) nor the attorney showed up to the hearing.
