Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, during a press conference at his Ministry in Kingston, Georgetown on Thursday, stated that the former mining town of Bartica will receive improved power supply by Sunday.
Minister Patterson said that a generator set from the Onverwagt power station in West Berbice, will arrive in Bartica to boost power generation in the Region Seven community over the weekend.
Recently, the Bartica Township was plagued with frequent power outages due to damage caused to two of the three power engines serving the town and its environs. This had resulted in the Bartica Guyana Power and Light (GPL) conducting scheduled outages.
Patterson said that he apologises to Bartica for the spate of blackouts and made assurances that the Ministry is doing all it can to remedy the situation.
The Minister explained that the town has three aged units. During an overhaul process, one was taken out. Almost immediately the others developed major faults. A second had to be removed.
The Minister explained that there is a challenge with the availability of land to house the generators. In the end the government was forced to rent a plot nearby.
Minister Patterson said, “There is a piece of land opposite the market which we have to rent for $1.5M monthly, and even though it is not economical, we had no other option because we cannot allow the community to suffer anymore. I hope we find the alternative as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile, Bartica Mayor Gifford Marshall has urged the need to have the GPL facility relocated so there is no pollution in the commercial zone.
