It rained goals on Saturday last at the Den Amstel ground when competition in the Stag sponsored West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Senior League continued with two more matches.
In the feature match, Pouderoyen eased to their fourth win in five matches whilst keeping their unbeaten record intact via a nerve racking 1-0 margin over Golden Warriors. Full points were sealed when the encounter was a mere 8 minutes old.
Quessey Alleyne’s shot squeezed in at the near post to beat the surprised Golden Warriors custodian who was down on his knees. Pouderoyen, once a dominant force on the West side and seeking to regain that momentum dominated their opponents even as many chances went by the way side.
Golden Warriors, one of the newer WDFA sides, tried to keep up momentum with the seasoned Pouderoyen team but were outhustled by the winners who now move into second position on 13 points ahead of Uitvlugt Warriors and two points behind leaders, Den Amstel; the top three sides are all unbeaten to date.
But the match of the day turned out to be the Eagles vs Vegae Boys affair with the former recording their biggest margin of victory ever, a 10-1 mauling of their rivals from Vergenoegen which commenced the match with just eight players.
Also a new addition to the club list on the West side, Vegae Boys found that the going would have been tough against the red hot Eagles. Two of their players recorded hat-tricks with one netting a brace as the rampant Eagles ran riot.
Oraldo Henry blasted the nets in the 4th, 59th and 68th minute; Chris Macey was on target in the 21st, 55th and 71st minute; Colin Henry flicked in his two goals in the 25th and 29th minute, while there was one apiece for Daniel Clarke in the 30th minute and Stephon Griffith in the 50th minute. Vegae Boys’ Devon Stuart surprisingly came off the field of play mid way of the second half which prompted their Coach to enter the field of play but his presence could not stem the flow of goals. In all the onslaught though, Vegae Boys goalkeeper Jermaine Cumberbatch stood out and were it not for his focus in the face of adversity, even saving a penalty, the scoreline could have been much more. Vegae pulled one back for good measure in the 73rd minute through a Shamar Marcus goal; Eagles’ goalie Alex Alexander finally beaten.
