The mining dredge which sunk in the Mazaruni River in the vicinity of Piereemap Falls over three months ago has now shifted to the centre of the river, thereby preventing food supplies from being transported to residents and miners in the Mid-Mazaruni area.
On Saturday, Kaieteur News made contact with the Red River Transportation Service which operates in the area and it was explained that the dredge’s new position has stopped all forms of river transport from passing.
A representative from the company said that in addition to the dredge shifting, the situation has worsened further as the water level continues to drop. He said that in light of this, nothing at all can navigate past the structure.
The dredge or “Dragga” as it is commonly called is blocking the main route used by jet and fuel boats to transport goods and passengers.
Both miners and residents in the region are now forced to utilize the services of aeroplanes or trucks in order to get their stocks in. He said that this has created an added economic burden on residents in the Region.
According to the representative, not only have the land miners been affected but also miners operating other water dredges along the river. Work has since stalled due to the difficulty of getting much needed supplies.
And if things could not get any worse, since the new school term began last Monday, children of the Isseneru Village and other communities in Mid-Mazaruni who are enrolled at schools in Bartica have not been able to attend classes.
According to reports the dredge sank while on its way to Potaro when its base was struck by the rocks. It was left hanging on its side despite complaints by boat operators.
The vessel is owned by Crown Mining Company and bears registration number SD 3398.
After this newspaper made the issue public, Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, Simona Broomes initiated a meeting to address the problem.
Broomes had made the point that the vessel could cost the lives of people using the river. It was expected that the dredge would have been removed within two days. Prior to this publication reporting on the matter, the dredge had been in that area for over a month.
On August 14, 2016, the Ministry had said that it was working with a mining company to remove the dredge. However, based on information received, currently nothing is being done.
