Weeks of competitive football is expected to climax this weekend when the Guyana Police Force tackles the Western Tigers Football Club for top honours and the $700,000 top prize as the curtains come down on the Mayor’s Cup Football championship at the Tucville Ground on Sunday afternoon; the runners up receive $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy.
Even as the ‘Tigers’ bare their claws to maul the law enforcement officers, football fans are assured of another potentially riveting affair when Ann’s Grove (East Coast) takes on Federal Winners’ Connection (Linden) to close off the podium spots and cart off the $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy in the third place playoff.
Officials of both teams, Police and Western Tigers, are confident of securing the coveted prize and have promised to enter the game firing on all cylinders. “We’ve come a long way and cannot afford to falter just as we are about to brace the tape,” said coach of Western Tigers, Calvin Allen. He said that his boys are well primed up and are going hard for a win.
Indeed, the boast is no idle one as Allen has a plethora of competent players to support his ambition. Randolph Wagner is his centre forward and has proved his capability in this department. Then there is the prolific goal scorer, Dwayne Mc Clennon who controls either the left or right flank coupled with efforts from centre midfielder, Phillip Rowley, with support from Daren Benjamin and Romell Legall, all competent players who could easily turn the tide in their team’s favour.
Allen’s boasts must not be taken lightly when one notes that his men had removed every team that attempted to block their progress; Den Amstel received a 7-2 whipping and the ‘Tigers’ replicated that feat against Lindeners, Eagles United. Ann’s Grove fared no better and was dealt a 4-1 whipping.
The ‘Tigers’ are in ripping form and their opponents may do well to note that the West Ruimveldt outfit has only just distinguished themselves after winning the Georgetown Premier League just over a month ago.
Coach of the Guyana Police Force, Dwayne Bobb, has respectfully submitted that the ‘Tigers’ had been on a roll but he remains adamant that his boys are ready for whatever that team brings to the field.
The Police had finished 3rd in the league and their coach feels that they are ready to take on the Tigers. “We’ve had an excellent tournament so far and aim to continue in the same winning vein,” said coach Bobb.
He admitted that this particular accolade has always eluded them as the officers were only able to advance to the quarter finals stage in every attempt so far. “We are out to change our fortunes and have a competent squad to support our ambitions,” said Bobb. He mentioned such players as strikers, Quinci Holder and Anthio Wallace who will receive support from defenders, Travis Jones and Winston Tanner while Darius Frank has demonstrated acute competence between the uprights. “We have demonstrated an exciting brand of football all through the tournament and fans could expect a similar performance in the finals,” Bobb assured.
Meanwhile, fans will receive a bonus when Grove, Kingston and North East La Penitence battle among themselves for a grand winner take all prize of $30,000 put up by Sparta Boss. This tussle gets underway at 17:00hrs sharp.
The fourth place finishers will receive $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy while Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team. The tournament’s top goal scorer will be gifted with a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store while Top Brandz of Broad and High Streets, distributors of Interstate vehicle batteries, is among the key sponsors on board.
Other sponsors are Aruwai Resort, Top Brandz, Ansa McAl, Minister of State Joe Harmon and John Fernandes.
