Although the boundary boards were brought in to the minimum size allowed and sun was out in all its glory from 11:00hrs until the rain retuned just after 15:15hrs the opening day of the third round of the GCB’s Jaguars
3-day Franchise League between Georgetown and East Coast was abandoned yesterday at Bourda due a soggy out field and a wet area on the pitch.
Just beyond the ‘pulled in’ boundary boards looked like ‘Lake Bourda’ and despite the hard work from the ground staff the decision by Umpires Edward Bowen and Nandkumar Shivsankar to call off the day’s play at 14:20hrs after an inspection at 14:00hrs,was never in question.
This was after torrential rain accompanied by thunder and lightning drenched the venue for 30 minutes from 10:00hrs and seeped under the covers. Georgetown, denied a victory over East Bank at Everest due to rain, before going down to Lower Corentyne at Albion, were desperate to play yesterday since they are in the penultimate position on the points table of the eight-team League.
East Coast, in second position behind Lower Corentyne, would have been keen to continue their unbeaten run after registering wins against West Demerara and East Bank. GCC Secretary Graeme Alli, who is also the Club Captain, explained after the drain surrounding the ground was cleaned earlier this year the ground was not being flooded as before when it rained.
”But since the Agriculture Ministry blocked off the Reagent Street Koker three months ago to facilitate construction work outside their compound, the backwash water from the Regent Street trench drains into the ground and causes flooding to the ground which also houses the GCB office.” Alli disclosed.
Alli informed that despite calls to the Ministry and City Council it is still unclear how much longer work on the Agriculture Ministry project will last and who is responsible for blocking off the Koker.
The GCC official informed that the club will use a pump to help get the water off of the ground today. Play is scheduled to commence at 09:00hrs today but a prompt start looks highly improbable. (Sean Devers)
