Despite the fact that a school bus was given to the residents of Nottinghamshire, Siberian/Old England, Coomacka and Three Friends Communities, through the President’s 5 B’s initiative, parents are still peeved that
they have to pay for transportation in order for their children to get to school, and do so on time.
Parents complained that for the first time on Monday the first day of the new school year, the bus arrived at 7:55 a.m. and by then the children had left. They also complained that while they are grateful for the bus, the road needs to be repaired.
According to one parent, the bus was unable to climb the hill because it is too low and the road has a lot of potholes.
“The first day de bus start to wuk, it bruk down because it low and de road ent good, it stick up. Dat bus will not last two weeks on de road.”
Other parents claimed that the bus went back to Linden and never worked again, and it is unfair for the children to have a school bus and still not be able to utilize it because of wrong advice given to the President.
“When de President de come in to give de bus, dem bring he through BOSAI road that good, so de man think de road good. These leaders in Linden think dem smart.”
The parents are urging the relevant authorities to repair the roads. They say that an alternative route could be used, but the road will have to pass through the De Clous land, but they are certain that it will be allowed.
“All the land at the back is dem De Clou land and de road could run from Teacher Ruby in Old England on the trainline straight up to Yariabo. All de people want is for the authorities to write a letter telling them that they will grade the road and they will allow it, but dem ent want do that. We got good good laterite by New Haven, all they got to do is bring a grader and grade it and spread it on de road and it good, but dem ent doing nothing. We want good roads so de bus could run.”
Another issue affecting the school children is that the washrooms are not functioning in the Primary school. One parent said that the children are being sent home to use the wash room. “On Monday the children had half-day school because two lil children mess up dem skin. Two months they had to fix dem toilet, now school open they still fixing. De children can’t go to school like that.”
When this reporter visited the school, men were working on the washrooms and the Head Teacher Ms. Verda Wilson Thom said that those facilities were okay.
