The finalists of this year’s edition of the Mayor’s Cup football championship and Aruwai first prize of $700,000 have been decided and the teams will collide on Sunday at the Tucville ground in the championship contest and third place playoff.
Giant Killer Police turned back the challenge of the Linden outfit, Federal Winners Connection 3-1, while Western Tigers brushed aside Ann’s Grove 4-1 in semifinal action on Sunday last at the Victoria ground.
This Sunday’s programme takes the form of a mini football extravaganza starting from as early as 3:00pm and has been sponsored by the Sparta Family. The early segment will feature a 7-a-side Inter Ward/Village competition for the Sparta Family trophy and $50,000 involving several teams. The fixtures for the 7-a-side will see Sophia facing Golden Grove in the opening match, at 3:30pm Kingston battle Uitvlugt, Albouystown clash with Grove at 4:00pm and North East La Penitence challenge Buxton at 4:30pm. The winners advance for the chance to play for the cash prize.
The third place game for the Mayor’s Cup featuring Federal Winners Connection against Ann’s Grove will kick off at 7:00pm, while the feature contest at 9:00pm pits Police against Western Tigers for the main prize.
The final winner will claim the top prize of $700,000 and a trophy donated by Aruwai Resort. The second place team pockets $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, while the third place team carts off $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy. The fourth place finishers will receive $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team, while tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
Top Brandz of Broad and High Streets, distributors of Interstate vehicle batteries, is among the key sponsors on board assisting the tournament. Apart from Aruwai Resort and Top Brandz, others on board include: Ansa McAl, Minister of State Joe Harmon and his ministry, John Fernandes, Ricks and Sari and AH&L Kissoon.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur has expressed thanks to his sponsors, nothing that their support have been the lifeline. He thanked CEO Top Brandz, Wayne James for his assistance.
The lead goalscorer is Dwayne McClennon with 6, Randolph Wagner has 4 and Dellon Kelly 3, all representing Western Tigers. Quincy Holder of Police also has 3 goals, as these players have a chance to claim the top scorer prize.
