The brainchild of ‘D’ Division Commander, Stephen Mansell – a four week skill training programme at the Leonora Technical and Vocational Skill Training Centre (LTVTC) for youths of Region Three – ended yesterday
with a graduation ceremony.
Some 71 youths from communities such as Bonasika, Hog Island, Parika and Tuschen graduated from the programme which included training in skills such as Mechanics, Carpentry, and Electrical Installation among other technical areas.
Principal of the Institute, Eon Nicholson, said that the initiative that was brought forward by Commander Mansell presented the LTVTC and the Ministry of Education an opportunity to reach out to the youths of Region Three.
Speaking to the graduates, Nicholson emphasised that the Police Force is not the enemy. He further stated that education does not have an age limit, as there is currently a 78-year-old woman doing Mechanics at the institute. He continued that through the theme; “Building Public Trust Through People Skills and Partnership”, Region Three could become a model for the country.
Commander Mansell said that the initiative is designed to empower youths and pointed out that partnerships with the Ministry of Education, the Regional Democratic Council and religious leaders in the communities are important.
“The police is the community and the community is the police,” he said. The aim of the project, he noted, is to transform Region Three community by community.
The commander further stated that since starting the initiative back in 2015, he has noticed a decrease of street limers in the region during the July-August holiday.
Commissioner of Police (ag) David Ramnarine, in his feature address to the young graduates, congratulated them and the partners for “a great accomplishment”.
He then stressed that crime is a social problem as studies have shown crime is a product of youth and masculinity as the evidence is in the prisons.” Some 75% of those incarcerated are aged 40 and below, 30 and below, some even as young as 15,” Ramnarine explained.
“What we choose to do with our lives is a gift to God because God’s gift to us is life” he said.
In his message to the graduates, he encouraged them to never give up, no matter the circumstances.
He cautioned against listening to frivolous advice and asked them if they wanted to be one of a million or one in a million.
Ramnarine said that the youths nowadays are lucky to have a whole host of avenues to gain an education, and encouraged them to seize the opportunities that would come their way.
The prison, he asserted, is a pathetic and hopeless collection of human wreckage, and urged the youths to develop a positive attitude towards their lives, to be one in a million if they want to progress.
At the end of the ceremony, the graduates were presented with certificates and trophies for their efforts.
