The Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground will be the venue what is anticipated to be keenly contested
battles when the quarterfinals of the Mayor’s Cup football championship are contested today as teams eye the Mayor’s Cup and Aruwai first prize.
The action opens at 4:30pm with the first of a triple header card when Santos take on Police in the first quarterfinal. Coordinator Lennox Arthur, who is a former national player and coach, said this game should be a good one for the fans and he is urging them to come out early to catch all the games. He noted that Santos is a young team who are reorganizing and are out to prove a point and the Police team can expect a pitched battle. Santos will depend on Ronald Dover, Fabian Crawford and Keith Caines to lead their charge, while the Lawmen have Keiron Boston, Dwayne Charles and Dion Rodney carrying their attack.
Coming up at 6:30pm Western Tigers challenge Eagles of Linden in the second match. Western Tigers are the favourites going into this match and will look to Ryan Adolph, Randolph Wagner and Dwayne Ali to carry their fight. However, Arthur warns that they ought to be very careful against the Linden outfit that is made up of mainly players under-19. Despite their youthfulness, Eagles have shown excellent chemistry and cohesiveness as a unit, many having come through the ranks from the school football
system and have shown they can work together to upstage any big name opposition, so the Tigers ought to beware this is not a walk in the park.
The last quarterfinal of the night at 8:30pm pits Riddim Squad against Linden champion team Federal Winners Connection in what will be another Linden vs Georgetown rivalry. The visitions will look to Keon Sears and Rawle Gittens to lead their attack against Riddim Squad, a team out of the Mocha Arcadia area, who will have several siblings to call on including the Hope and Ramsey boys. This should be a scorcher between two very talented sides.
Following today’s action, three nights of the tournament remain to determine the winner.
The semis are set for Wednesday August 31 and final and third place fixed for September 11.
At stake in the championship is the top prize of $700,000 and a trophy donated by Aruwai Resort. The second place team pockets $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, while the third place team carts off $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy. The fourth place finishers will receive $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team, while tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
