As celebrations wind down on the month-long activities in observance of the abolition of slavery, a number of entities are rounding off their celebrations.
One such group is the East Canje African Cultural Group, which is situated in the lower East Canje area, and will once again be hosting its Emancipation celebrations. The activity will be held today at the Goed Bananen Land Ground.
According to the organisers this is the ninth year that the activity will be held in the East Canje district. This year no activity was held in the area on August Monday since it was decided that all the African groups would converge at Kildonan for one big celebration on that day.
The East Canje African Cultural Group came into being after the need arose for the community to have its own activity after residents of the area had to trek to different parts of Guyana to be a part of the yearly emancipation events.
Today’s activity is expected to kick off at 10:00 hrs with a Road Show and parade.
At the venue a number of cultural activities and stage show will be held which include displays by the Majorettes, African drumming, folk songs and dancing, skits, poems, storytelling among some other activities.
A number of folk games will also be a part of the day’s activities including ‘saul pass’, hop scotch, ‘bun house’ and a number of ring games. The usual African foods will also be on display including the popular Cook Up and Metemgee, with other delicacies including Conkee, Cassava Pone and Saltfish among other dishes.
According to the organisers, most of the activities will be free of charge, but whatever funding is realized will be used by the group to help in the enhancement of the African culture in the area.
