A woman was yesterday fined $100,000 with an alternative of serving five months imprisonment, after she pleaded guilty to smuggling 21 ‘towa towa’ birds out of Guyana via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri.
Sadika Rodney admitted that on August 24, at the CJIA, without the necessary permit, she attempted to smuggle the birds.
Rodney told Magistrate Renita Singh that she had collected the bag from her uncle for travelling, and failed to check what was inside. She claimed that she only became aware of what was concealed inside the bag after she was intercepted at the airport.
Meanwhile, in another case, a 21-year-old woman was remanded to prison after she denied having four grams of cocaine in her possession. Ariel Singh of Alexander Street, Kitty, Georgetown, was allegedly found with the illicit substance on August 23.
Singh was represented by Attorney Adrian Thompson when she appeared yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The defendant is scheduled to make her next court appearance on September 26.
