The Guyana Defence Force (GDF), which has developed into one of the top clubs in Guyana at the moment, is armed and ready for battle at the seventh Boyce/Jefford Track and Field Classic at the Mackenzie Sports Club
(MSC) Ground in Linden this weekend.
Top sprinter from the GDF, Akeem Stewart has declared his and his team’s readiness despite an injury plagued season. GDF is the only major club yet to win the Classic, losing out by a mere 16 points last year in the competition.
“Well I’m just looking to go out and have a great day, I mean I have been having a rough time this year due to injuries but I’ve been working very hard with the Coach and he’s expecting me to pull through,” Stewart said in a recent News Room interview.
“I am going out there to have fun and compete with my fellow sprinters and enjoy the day,” he continued. The sprinter highlighted that the road to recovery was not easy.
“It has been slow but most times pressuring and sometimes I am jealous of my training partners because I cannot do the explosive work or the programme they are doing, but I still have faith in myself and believe in myself that whatever I go out and do, I will do my best,” Stewart continued.
With GDF being a top contender and then winning the 4x100m Men last year, Stewart talked up the chances of his GDF team.
“Well the 4×1 team coming around you know we looking to break the 40s barrier, we have been running some very fast times this year, so we looking to run at least 39s, but the team has been training hard and they are confident in going out and putting their best foot forward and will be supporting 100 percent,” Stewart mentioned.
The GDF is a certain contender for the $1M top prize and apart from Stewart, has a host of other athletes in its arsenal, including, Patrick King, Rupert Perry, Cleveland Forde, Davin Fraser and females Aniqua Powley and Natricia Hooper.
