An eleven-year-old student of the Golden Grove Primary School, East Coast Demerara was electrocuted yesterday afternoon, after he reportedly came into contact with an exposed Guyana Power and Light (GPL) cable.
Dead is Jermaine Holder of Lot 70 President’s College Road, Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara. His father, Travis Holder, said that he learnt of his son’s demise after his nephew came running with Jermaine Holder’s lifeless body in his arms.
Mr. Holder said that his son and nephew were assisting him with building a septic tank in their yard minutes before his son was electrocuted a short distance from their home.
The dead boy’s cousin said that he and Jermaine were fetching construction materials into the yard for his uncle. The cousin said that after a while he left the yard and ventured to the ‘line top’.
According to the cousin, a boy from the village ran to him screaming “Jermaine get shock. Jermaine get shock.”
The relative said that he ventured to the scene and found his cousin lying motionless on the ground. He stated that he also felt a jolt of electricity while trying to rescue the lad.
He added that Jermaine had touched a chain link fence that is near a roof on which an exposed electricity cable rests. The relative said that he and his uncle rushed Jermaine to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where his cousin was pronounced dead.
Jermaine Holder leaves to mourn his parents- his mother who is overseas- and four siblings.
