The Guyana Cricket Board yesterday launched its inaugural three-day Jaguars Franchise League at its office, Regent Street, Bourda. The tournament which is set to commence on August 26 with four matches is designed
to give more players an opportunity to stake a claim for national selection and has also replaced the annual Inter-County four-day competition.
The teams are Upper Corentyne, Lower Corentyne, West Berbice, East Coast Demerara, Georgetown, East Bank/Upper Demerara, West Demerara and Essequibo. The 33 cricketers under contract with the WICB and Cricket Guyana Inc. have been allocated with the various teams while the remainder of the teams would be made up with other players drawn largely from those eight geographical areas.
Several franchise holders are at various stages of negotiations with GCB and it is an opportunity for any entity to come on board and take ownership in the team of their choice preferably in the geographical area of their business enterprise.
This franchise system is aimed at allowing interested parties to invest in the development of the team of their choice and have a greater stake in the actual composition, planning and development of their respective teams.
The local leagues will be streamlined to feed into the WICB regional franchise system (PCL & Super 50) as well as the CPL T20 and is the perfect opportunity for our local players to showcase their talent.
The 3-day format will be followed by the WICB PCL league which runs from November to March 2017 with a few breaks in between. The local 50-overs league will run during the breaks of the PCL in the months of January and February with the WICB Super 50 tournament slated for March 2017 and will be called the Jaguars Super 50 League.
The most exciting T20 league will commence in the latter part of March 2017 and will be referred to as the Jaguars Premier League. Speaking at the launching ceremony Secretary of the GCB Anand Sanasie said that everyone must have a chance not only those players who have earned professional or academy contracts.
Sanasie pointed out, that despite the huge cost to offset the entire tournament, the GCB is financially strong at least for this year, adding that each player and support staff will be paid $5,000 per day once cricket is played.
West Berbice will be based at Young Warriors Cricket Club ground, East Coast Demerara will be at Enmore Community Centre ground, Georgetown at GCC, East Bank/Upper Demerara at Everest, West Demerara at Wales and Essequibo at the Imam Bacchus ground.
The franchise teams will play each other once with the League set to conclude on October 9.
