In light of the rampant piracy in the Corentyne area, Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan
has disclosed that Guyana is now working closely with neighbouring Suriname in an effort to quell the scourge.
Speaking to the media, Ramjattan said that recently the Ministry in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force had cause to call in some persons suspected of involvement in such nefarious activities and “talk with them”. He noted that since that “talk”, there has been a noteworthy decline of piracy in the area.
When asked about the specific measures being put in place, the Minister stated that there has been more aerial surveillance in the areas that are usually plagued by piracy and in addition, as pirates often flee to Suriname after doing their “mischief”, there has been improved coordination with the Surinamese police in relation to capturing perpetrators.
Ramjattan disclosed that he had a meeting with Suriname’s Minister of Security following the recently concluded CARICOM summit, and since partnering with the Surinamese Security Ministry and police, Guyanese pirates and in other cases, persons involved in illegal activities on the high seas, have been arrested in Suriname.
Minister Ramjattan noted, that his Surinamese counterpart even mentioned to him that the piracy issue could spread to Surinamese waters, and as a precaution, the diplomatic relations were further strengthened with Guyana.
Pirates aside, Minister Ramjattan noted that the Special Weapons and Tactical (SWAT) Unit is still functioning. He said that the Commissioner of Police had indicated to him that whenever it was needed, members of the SWAT team would be called upon to assist in crime-ridden areas, dense locations and in tactical situations.
The unit was launched on February 6, 2014.
