Forty-year-old Paula Ronald, 40, who was injured last Tuesday in an accident at Dundee Village, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, is slowly recovering at home. This is according to her son Antonio Mendonca.
Ronald had suffered a fractured hand. She has been discharged from the hospital and is currently recovering at her New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop home. Mendonca explained that the family is still quite shaken, since the accident had claimed the life of his 15-year-old sister Julia Mendonca.
The accident also involved the driver of the vehicle, 40-year-old Patrick Mayers, and Ronald’s daughters – eight-year-old Selena DaSilva and four-year-old Emma, all of whom escaped uninjured.
Julia Mendonca, a former student of Mae’s Secondary, resided with her brother Antonio in Campbellville, Georgetown, while his two younger sisters lived with their mother.
According to reports, the family was returning home after travelling to Corentyne, Berbice. The accident occurred around 01:30hrs on the Public Road.
It was reported that Mayers, driving a Toyota Allion motor car, PVV 4387, lost control of the vehicle and it slammed into a utility pole. The vehicle then overturned. Antonio Mendonca said that Julia Mendonca was found under the vehicle. A police statement had said that she sustained multiple injuries and died on the spot.
Antonio Mendonca said that his mother and two younger sisters were taken to the Mahaicony Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for treatment.
He said that Mayers is still in police custody until the post mortem is completed before he can be officially charged. Police had said that the driver was detained after a breathalyser test indicated that he had consumed alcohol over the legal limit.
