The body of Malika Hamilton, the teen who reportedly left her Two Friends Village, East Coast Demerara home on Monday to go swimming at the Hope Canal, was found dead yesterday.
After the teen failed to return home on Monday evening, a search party consisting of villagers and close relatives was formed. At around 13:00hrs yesterday, a member of the search party spotted the teen’s body in the canal close to the savannah area, and the family’s worst fears were confirmed.
Relatives of the now dead Hamilton were quickly summoned to the scene. A crowd built up and awaited the Police who arrived on the scene shortly after.
As undertakers from Lyken’s Funeral Home arrived and fished the teen’s body out of the canal, several relatives started wailing and some even had to be restrained as the body was being taken away.
The dead teen’s grandmother, Dorel Cambridge, told the media that she feared the worst after her granddaughter did not return home after leaving for the canal with several friends to swim. The distraught woman pointed out that Hamilton was not in the habit of swimming in the canal.
Investigators at the scene said that apart from an apparent broken neck, there were no other visual marks of violence on the body. Villagers were overheard saying that Hamilton was last seen in the presence of two men on the railway embankment in Hope.
Commander of “C” Division, Marlon Chapman told Kaieteur News that the suspected cause of death is drowning, but the police are awaiting the results of a post mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
