Sans Souci Jaguars Cricket Club were rewarded with their first prize of $100,000 for winning the Banks DIH T20 tournament which was held recently in Wakenaam.
Sans Souci Jaguars defeated G Square Cavaliers by 10 runs in the final which was played at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground.
The presentation took place on Monday last at Hamburg Beach, Tiger Island in the Essequibo River. Jaguars also took home a trophy while G Square Cavaliers pocketed $50,000 and a trophy.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Rawl Pierce of Banks DIH congratulated the teams and said the tournament will be played on an annual basis.
He pointed out that he is happy to see the tournament has generated a lot of interest in Wakenaam and hope to expand in the future. “I am hoping to involve teams from other parts of Essequibo and include more prizes which will attract not only players but the fans as well. I am impressed with what I saw in Wakenaam.
The people there are very passionate about cricket and I hope to take the game to further heights on the island which has produced a number of talented national cricketers,” he added.
Pierce expressed gratitude to the Wakenaam Cricket Committee.
