$30M at stake in Guyana Cup Horserace meet
Over 60 race horses including a number from overseas have taken entry so far as entries were expected to close yesterday for the mouthwatering 10th annual “Summer Buster” Guyana Cup Horserace event.
According to the organisers a number of other owners have indicated their willingness to be a part of the day’s programme which is expected to swell past the 80 mark. Over the past week most of the tracks and open spaces on the coast land were fully occupied as trainers, jockeys, grooms and owners’ of most of the top horses in Guyana were busy whipping their charges into shape for the Golden Jubilee Independence Anniversary Horse race extravaganza.
Organized by the Jumbo Jet Business Enterprise and friends, the jumbo horse race meet is set for Sunday 14th August at the Port Mourant (Big Yard) Turf Club, Corentyne, Berbice.
With just one week to go before race day, the horses racing fraternity in Guyana is buzzing with excitement. With a colossal $30M available for the event which is by far the biggest sporting activity for the August Holidays in Guyana, thousands are expected to throng to the venue.
The “Sports of Kings” has received some king size investments with the Government of Guyana, Banks DIH Limited, Trophy Stall being some of the main supporters of the event which is expected to get on the way from 12:00 hrs.
The feature “A” and lower event has already attracted a star studded lineup featuring the best runners in Guyana. The lineup is still incomplete since some of the owners wants to make some last minute adjustments. Turfites will be hard pressed to pick a winner this early.
The big news is that Guyana’s only “A” class animal Score’s Even is back to full fitness and will be looking to even things up. Kings Knight is reigning supreme at the moment and will be hard to beat, but double defending Champion CP Got Even is in tip top shape and will be looking for a three peat. The rest of the cast is unbelievably impressive with a fearsome pack of Just Call Me Boss, Princess She Not, Golden Blue Echo, Plum Plum, Lady Budapest, Climate Change and the newly imported Blame the Jockey of the Nand Persaud stable among others are expected to give turfites their money’s worth. The winners prize is $4M and the Guyana Cup trophy over 1800M.
The co-feature 1600M event for 3yrs old horses, bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies has a winner’s take of $2M and trophy.
The two year old Guyana Bred event has a first prize of $400,000 and trophy over 1100M.
The E and lower event over 1500M will see the winner taking home $800,000 and trophy over 1500M.
The event for animals classified G1 and lower features horses from Suriname and those from Guyana. There is a race for horses classified H and lower and West Indies bred that have not started since August 30th 2015. The distance is 1200M for a winner’s money of $400,000.
Horses classified H3 and West Indies Maiden and also open To Guyana Bred trotters will have their chance to race over 1200M for a winner’s money of $400,000.
The event for J and K class horses will see animals from Suriname matching their skills against the Guyanese animals over 1100M for a take home incentive of $350,000 and trophy.
Horses from Suriname have also been tagged to feature in the L and lower event against those from Guyana over 1100M for a winning purse of $250,000 and trophy.
The winner of the co-feature event for 3yrs old horses, bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies over 1600M will take home a winner’s money of $2M and trophy.
A number of added attractions and incentives have been made available including for the winners of the A class, the three year old and the two year old races. They will get an extra $500,000, $400,000 and $200,000 bonuses respectively.
The top Jockey along with the runner up, the top stable and champion trainer will all be presented with trophies and other incentives compliments of the organizers and Trophy Stall.
