A 42-year-old dredge owner was shot to the abdomen on Saturday, minutes after he asked one of his employees to take a “rest” from the job.
Up to press time, Mark Dorway was undergoing surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). The bullet, which struck the miner, reportedly exited his back.
The incident occurred sometime around 14:00 hrs at Arakaka Backdam, in the North West District and the suspect, who has only been identified as “Ratty” is said to be on the run.
According to information received, Dorway asked the suspect to pour water on an engine but the man refused.
Dorway reportedly informed his wife that he then told the suspect that he needed to take rest from the job after which the dredge owner heard an explosion, then felt a pain in his abdomen.
Kaieteur News was told that when the worker opened fire on the 42-year-old man, all the other workers ran for their lives. Dorway was taken to the Matthew’s Ridge Hospital and was later transferred to the GPHC.
