President David Granger thinks that his predecessor, Bharrat Jagdeo, is presenting himself as a stumbling
block in the pathway of Guyana’s journey to social cohesiveness.
The Head of State said that his government is trying to do its part to unify Guyana but noted that there are those who seemingly do not want to see the achievement of that goal.
Granger said that his government knows that Guyana has a real problem of division and that is why it saw the need to set up a Ministry of Social Cohesion.
While many have opined that the Ministry of Social Cohesion has done nothing significant so far in connection with its mandate, Granger boasted that the Ministry has been making strides.
In this regard, the President spoke of the initiatives that the Ministry has taken so far. He pointed to inter-faith forums and said that the Ministry continues to spread awareness through education.
Granger said that the comments that Jagdeo made would do no good for the country and go contrary to the efforts of the Ministry of Cohesion.
Jagdeo told an attentive gathering in New York that currently in Guyana, “There’s an assault on our democracy, there’s an assault on people of Indian origin, there’s an assault on supporters of the PPP (People’s Progressive Party). What we thought would never return to Guyana, in just one short year has returned with full force, and even worse in some regards than the Burnham era.”
The President said, “The Leader of the Opposition needs to temper his language.”
He added that it is never good when people who are supposed to be responsible in society go about
preaching divisiveness.
Granger said that while his government is making every effort to promote unity, “there will be extremists who continue to speak in divisive terms and this is what we need to put an end to.”
The President said that if the Leader of the Opposition has evidence that there has been wrongdoing in accordance with the Constitution of Guyana, he should present the evidence either to the government or to the court.
Ironically, Granger then pointed out that Jagdeo is before the court because of the language he used and has been in court twice before for similar matters. Granger said, “I urge him (Jagdeo) to restrain his comments.”
The President noted that Guyana is a multi-religious, multi-racial country. He said that the damage that racial and religious divisiveness has caused is evident around the world and Guyana does not need to be added to the list of countries with such tragedies.

Over and over we have indicated that if a study is done on the political development of the rural societies it would be found that the bottom house meetings of which the ppp has been masters were instrumental in the kind of scenarios we see being played out in present day.
Examine jagdeo and you will find the average young rural person. Over the years this has been transferred to the city dwellers though local and international migration. Thus the way a crowd in the developed metropolis can sit listen to such bile as spewed by jagdeo and applaud.
Well the fact that some folks are saying that the Ministry of Social Cohesion is not doing anything is a revelation of the magnitude of the problem we have on our hands. (jagdeo) type of behaviour does not lend itself to progress. At some point he should be dragged before the nation and be made to explain his rantings and be embarrassed. It is like Rohee saying there is discrimination and he is asked t name two indians and not be able to do so after one year.
