When the Jamaica Tallawahs face-off with the top of table Guyana Amazon Warriors from 19:00hrs today in the first play-off game at Warner Park in St Kitts, higher totals are anticipated on the smallest of the grounds used for the 2016 Hero CPL matches.
Only two teams have managed 200 totals this season. The St Lucia Zouks piled up 206-3 in scorching heat in Florida against the Tallawahs and the Patriots made 203-7 against the Zouks at Warner Park.
And if the most destructive t20 batsman Jamaican Skipper Chris Gayle, who has 303 runs and along with TKR’s Colin Munroe, scored the only centuries this season, gets going Warner Park could look as tiny as a backyard.
Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara (260 runs with two fifties), Chadwick Walton (245 with 2 fifties) and Rovman Powell (203) have also contributed with the bat and it was good to see that the Tallawahs still prevailed when their captain failed.
Shakib Al Hasan has only managed 139 runs from 10 matches and has been a major disappointment for the Franchise from Reggie Country.
Andre Russell, who got married during the Florida leg, was not as consistent with the bat as he usually is and was blasted for 64 runs in four over against the Zouks in Florida when leading run scorer Johnson Charles (410) and Andre Fletcher blasted the ball to all parts of American venue.
The loss of Dale Steyn, their leading wicket taker with 12 wickets, is a major blow to their bowling attack but Kesrick Williams has 11 wickets and has done a good job with the ball for his team.
Imad Wasim, the Pakistani left-arm spinner, has been the most economical bowler for the Tallawahs, has seven wickets as does Al Hasan and Russell.
The Warriors batting carried by Australian Chris Lynn is only behind Johnson with 398 runs and proving a revelation this season after struggling badly for the Tallawahs last year.
Jason Mohammed has the most catches and has been very consistent with the bat but only Dwayne Smith and Aussie Nick Maddinson who has struggled to score freely in his three matches since replacing Martin Guptill, has managed half-centuries for the Warriors.
It important that as crunch time approaches the other batsmen need to pull their weight more so if Lynn, Smith and Mohammed fails at the top Chris Barnwell, Anthony Bramble, Steven Jacobs, Skipper Rayed Emrit and Sohail Tanvir step up with the bat.
Tanvir’s 18 scalps is only one less than DJ Bravo’s 19 wickets and has bowled well throughout the season, will need support from leg-spinner Adam Zampa (14 wickets), left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and Emrit has bowled well for the Warriors.
The winner of this match goes to the final, while the loser gets a second chance of playing in the final since they are to play the winner to tomorrow’s game between the Zouks and TKR. The loser of that game goes home.
Where is the BETTER MANAGEMENT/RENEGOTIATION OF THE OIL CONTRACTS you promised Jagdeo?
