GDF is best gym but Republican Joshua Joseph wins best boxer award
Three nights of fistic fury came to an end last Sunday evening and when the smoke had cleared, the Guyana Defence Force accrued the most points and retained the top gym prize when the action in the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis National Novices Boxing Championships concluded at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
The Republican Boxing Gym continues to show remarkable progress and finished as the second best gym. The institution recouped some pride after its welterweight boxer, Joshua Joseph, won the Best Boxer award following a win in the semi-finals over his gym mate Bobby Hou-yen and an impressive knockout victory over Mark Blake (GDF) in Sunday night’s finals.
Youth boxer, Duel Augustine of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG) punched his way to a unanimous verdict over Michael Edwards of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) and was eventually adjudged the Best Boxer in his category, while Akea Lamaizon (PRBG) turned in a brilliant performance to defeat Shonette McFarlane after the referee halted their 64kgs bout at 2 minutes of the second round.
Lamaizon looked the more polished of the two females, dancing and jabbing while McFarlane plodded behind her with several long range punches. It was not long after the bell that Lamaizon connected with a fierce right hand that rocked her opponent and forced the referee to institute a mandatory 8 count. To her credit, Macfarlane took her blows and courageously retaliated upon resumption but Lamaizon kept a high guard while keeping her jabs and crosses in her opponent’s face.
Both boxers treaded blows in the early part of the second round but it was Lamaizon who distinguished herself with crunching blows that drifted her opponent and forced a mandatory 8 count. Macfarlane courageously continued to advance but found the skill of Lamaizon a bit too much to counter. Another straight right connected to the soldier’s head and the referee counted her and then waved the contest off.
Joseph was always in line for the best boxer award and stamped his authority from the onset against Blake. Less than one minute into the fight the Republican steered his man into one of the neutral corners and dealt him several clouts that forced the referee to institute the mandatory 8 count.
The soldier managed to beat the count but was given another dose, this time in the red corner. He blocked up but his guards proved to be porous and after he had received several wallops the referee decided that he had seen enough and waved the bout off 1:10secs of the first round.
Rose Hall Jammers bantamweight boxer, Julius Kesney, also turned in an impressive performance that earned him a TKO victory over John Phillips (GDF). The boxers were engaged in a fair exchange during the initial stage of the bout until Kesney backed up his man in the blue corner with pinpoint jabs and crosses. Kesney then delivered a wicked volley that rocked his man and forced the referee to count him.
In round two, Kesney continued where he had left off in the preceding round and landed a wicked 4 punch combination and after administering the count, the referee decided that Phillips was too hurt to continue. The time was 44secs into the second stanza.
In other results Don Cumberbatch (GDF) scored a unanimous decision over his gym mate, Reez Jahurali to win the flyweight title while Jamal Brisport (GDF) outpunched his gym mate, Triston Browne to be crowned the lightweight champion. Colin Hinds (GDF) won his jnr/welterweight bout against his gym mate. Leon Semple while the middleweight champion is Geraldo Phillips (REP) who defeated Joshua Fraser (GDF).
Renaldo Niles was also in winners’ row and won the light/heavyweight title on points from his gym mate, Marvin Williams. Brian Leitch (REP) then won his heavyweight bout on points over Ryan Roberts before the superheavyweight bout between Floyd Cato (GDF) and his gym mate, Renee Lewis, ended in a technical knockout in favour of Cato at 1:37secs of the final round.
The boxers will rest for another month to return on September 2ndfor the National Intermediate championships that culminates on September 4.
