Just days after the M.V.Sabanto, one of the Chinese boats given to the Guyana Government slammed into the Good Hope/Supenaam Ferry Stelling, repairs have commenced.
Sections of the rails of the stelling and the anchor (floating base) were damaged as well as the stelling plates which shifted as a result of the impact.
Immediately, several technical staff members from the Transport and Harbours Department were dispatched to conduct a technical accessment. One of the technical staff conducting an investigation said that the damage was regarded as major.
Reports have stated that the M.V.Sabanto crashed into the Good Hope/Supenaam Ferry Stelling after encountering some problems just a short distance from Supenaam.
Captain C. Francis who came in for some strong criticisms from a car driver whose vehicle sustained minor damage explained that while the M.V.Sabanto was approaching a creek not too far from Supenaam, he ordered the person who was captaining the boat at the time to turn down both engines because whenever the tide is low around the creek, the boat usually drifts for a short period.
Francis is not aware of what could have transpired subsequently to lead to the boat accelerating and slamming into the stelling.
As a result of the unfortunate incident at the Good Hope/ Supenaam Ferry Stelling, TH&D suspended the M.V.Sabanto from operation. The ferry did not sustain any damage.
The M.V.Makouria and the M.V. Malali were put in place to ply the Essequibo operations.
