Manager of the Guyana team to the 2016 Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships, July 30-31, Marc Sonoram says he is confident that the team which features three first timers will represent Guyana well, this weekend.
“Based on the level of competition back home and the criteria that was used to select this team I am satisfied that we have pulled together a team that is hungry and ready to show this nation and by extension the Caribbean, what we are capable of.”
Sonoram also posited that the riders have shown a high level of discipline and commitment consistently and this is just reward for their efforts over that past months.
The team arrived in St Lucia last evening after being in transit in Trinidad and Tobago for five hours. The two experienced riders on the team are Andrew Hicks and Raphael Leung who represented Guyana the last time this country was represented at this level, Suriname, 2015.
Both Hicks and Leung competed in the Juvenile category and placed 6th and 4th, respectively. That same year, Alanzo Ambrose won Guyana’s lone medal, bronze in the Road Race following a spirited and strategic ride.
This time around, one of the three debutants, reigning National Junior Time Trials and Road Race champion Christopher Cornelius headlines the team and, based on recent form is expected to lead Guyana’s bid for medals though the competition will not be easy especially from the Trinidad and Tobago riders.
The other debutants, Zaman Khan and Jornel Yearwood along with Cornelius will bank on the experience of Hicks and Leung.
Hicks, has been competing in Trinidad and Tobago for over one year now and has been matching pedals with some of the best youths in the Caribbean. As the most experienced rider on the Guyana team and the eldest, Hicks has promised to make his knowledge work towards the benefit of the team.
Manager Sonoram said he is satisfied that his charges, once they stick to the team plan will be able to match the rest of their peers and come out victorious. He informed that the team will be aiming to get familiar with the race route today whilst there are also a number of Technical Meetings scheduled.
Coach Randolph Roberts who last performed such duties at this level in 2011 in Aruba says that the team is an experienced one and they are here to win.
“The team is very positive of taking back medals to Guyana. They are not over confident. I would like to also note that selection of this team was not based on friends and families but based on performance so we have the best possible team here to represent our nation.”
