When the Rosignol Chinese Restaurant murder trial continued in the Berbice High Court the caution
statement was admitted into evidence.
On trial for murder before Justice Jo Ann Barlow and a mixed jury is Shazam Khalil called “Rabbit”, 23, a cane harvester of 53 Shieldstown, West Bank Berbice. He is charged with killing Shazina Mohamed, 19, of Edinburgh Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice. The man in a fit of rage had allegedly knifed the teen who was his ex-lover to death.
The woman was brutally stabbed about her body around 19:00 hours on January 17, last year, in front of the Yang Yi Chinese Restaurant, at Rosignol, West Bank Berbice.
Attorney at law Stacy Goodings told the court that on the day in question; the woman was ambushed and stabbed by the accused who then fled the scene.
The woman was picked up and rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital and was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she succumbed.
A voir dire was conducted after defence attorney, Tajenarine Ramroop, made certain objections.
When the matter continued detective Corporal Kofi Robinson continued his evidence on the witness stand. The corporal told the court that after receiving certain information he conducted investigation into the matter. He informed the court of the part he played in the investigation including taking a caution statement from the accused.
The statement was then admitted into evidence. He stated, “Officer, me know Shazina for about three and a half years. We have a relationship. Me does give Shazina money every week. Me does give she everything she does ask for. On the 17th January 2015, I was walking in Rosignol when I saw Shaniza and a man at the Yang Yi Chinese Restaurant.
She called me and I go to her and she tell me, this is she man she deh with. We start argue and then we start to scramble. Shazina cuff me to me eye. Then I stab she about four to five times. Then I run away.
“Officer a love Sheniza bad and she hurt me bad and she hurt my feelings when I see she with a man. I had tattoo she name on me stomach. I does give Shazina whatever she wants.”
Also taking the witness stand was Detective Constable Andel Doris, who related to the court the part he played during the trial. He informed the court that he is a qualified photographer having received training from the Guyana Police Force. He took photographs which were presented in court as evidence.
The state had earlier called Police Constable Orwin Barton, who testified to being a part of the police anti-crime patrol.
He said that relative to a report of an alleged murder received, he and a squad of policemen journeyed to the home of the accused at Shieldstown where they arrested him around 04:00 hrs on January 18, last year. The man was taken into custody and subsequently charged.
The matter is continuing.
