Dear Editor,
Once more the workers of the Georgetown Municipality are made to suffer the indignity and hardship of waiting well beyond the customary pay time to receive their monthly wages and salaries because the Council says that the ‘kitty’ is empty. Their mortgages and house rents will have to wait to be paid, their telephone, electricity and water bills will have to wait to be paid, along with their obligations to Courts, Singers and their box hand. But far worse than all of that their contributions to the National Insurance Scheme, the Guyana Revenue Authority, and Credit Unions are in arrears as the Council has not honoured these payments for months now, thus, jeopardizing their health and wellbeing.
All the while this is happening, the political and administrative leaders of the Council are travelling half way around the world in comfort and style enjoying delicious and indulgent dining, staying at luxurious hotels that are havens of style and comfort with impeccable service and attention.
How could this be right? It is not only callous, it is criminal. What benefits will the workers and the citizens get from these luxury jaunts? European and North American Mayors and City Managers do not travel with the regularity that ours do even though they can afford it and that is because of their commitment to being right there to manage their cities hands on.
The government says that they do not want to interfere with duly elected municipalities and other local government bodies but surely the Ministry of Communities which has supervising responsibility for local government cannot sit idly and allow the citizens and workers of Georgetown to be taken advantage of like this. And what of the Labour Unions? Are they no longer the voice of these poor workers? Or has everyone become afraid of the ‘Fantastic Four’?
