For the 5th year, cell phone giants DIGICEL will be bringing into focus Breast Cancer via the medium of sports with cycling being the vehicle to pedal the message.
Yesterday at their Barrack Street headquarters, Senior Sponsorship and Events Manager Ms. Louanna Abrams and Evolution Cycle Club (ECC) President, Keith Fernandes unveiled plans for this year’s race which will be contested on October 30th, next.
While the race logistics are yet to be finalized in terms of the distance and route, Ms Abrams, in remarks noted that Digicel has been successfully hosting the Digicel Breast Cancer Awareness Cycle Race for several years and it has proven to be one of their most significant signature events to date.
“We not only give opportunities to our young and budding cyclists and teams but we also make a sizeable contribution to aid in breast cancer awareness and treatment across Guyana,” Ms. Abrams stated.
ECC is once again the preferred club to organize and run the event for the second successive year but this time around, the two entities have stepped it up a notch, Ms. Abrams informed.
“Essentially, this partnership will involve the club spearheading and organising the cycling race as well as providing assistance in several community activities which Digicel is planning. The community activities will enable youths to learn to ride, be exposed to the rules of safety and aspire to be a cyclist which is what our company envisions, providing opportunities for youth and community development.”
It was noted by the Digicel representative that the agreement will last for 12 months and they are looking forward to a productive partnership with ECC.
Fernandes expressed thanks on behalf of ECC to Ms Abrams and Digicel for their support as the club embarks on the journey of representing the Digicel brand whilst promoting the sport in Guyana.
He noted that the opportunity to once again organise this significant race has sent a wave of excitement throughout the membership of the team and those associated with it.
“We are proud to be partnering with Digicel for this initiative and look forward to working together to increase the awareness of cycling as a health initiative and a sport. Our team is looking forward to contributing to the promotion of cycling safety and skills for the young. We are especially grateful to Ms Louanna Abrams and Ms Jacqueline James who worked hard to bring this all to fruition.”
Team Evolution’s riders have been very dominant in Guyana in its short history and they are looking forward to continue in this regard whilst also shaping a solid future for the sport on and off the cycling track.
