Yvonne Murray amassed 4 points and a positive spread of 299 to dethrone her husband, Carlton, to capture top honours and keep the trophy within the family when scrabble players convened at her Nandy Park residence for their monthly goodwill tournament on Sunday evening.
However, it was not smooth sailing for Yvonne after Michael Benjamin also accrued 4 points but was relegated to the second place after registering a lower positive spread of 46; Benjamin had earlier dropped his inaugural game to Murray by a large spread of 127. The rampaging Murray then took care of Carlton (142) before losing to Ruby Cummings by a 35 spread margin. She wrapped up sessions with wins over Maurice Munro (59) and Ulric Harris (6) to finish on 4 points and a positive spread of 299.
It is the second time within the last two tournaments that Murray and Benjamin had ended on the 4 points stalemate and as many times that the former player surged home by dint of a larger spread. Following that loss, Benjamin regrouped and went on to dispose of Maurice Munro (96) before eking out a 28 spread victory over Carlton. Ulric Harris proved to be a tougher customer and Benjamin only managed to cross the line in his final play to win by a spread of 5 after which he won from Ruby Cummings (42) to finish on 4 points but a lower spread of 46.
The players return next month to continue the intense rivalry but in the meantime will convene at the Herdmanston Lodge, Queenstown, this and every Thursday afternoon to join other players for their weekly practice sessions.
