Investigators have already taken DNA samples from the son and a brother of Elvin Ceres, an electrician, who is believed to have been burnt to death in a fire at Wales, West Bank Demerara (WBD) late last month.
It is unclear when the samples will be sent to the Trinidad and Tobago Forensic Lab for testing.
Around 01:30 hrs on June 30, last, fire-fighters were called to put out a blaze at an unoccupied house located at Lot 1 Goedverwagting, Wales. A body was later found among the rubble in the bathroom area of the property.
Residents in the area had assumed that the remains might have been that of a vagrant, who managed to sneak his way into the property to seek shelter for the night. However, Ceres disappeared the same day the house was burnt. No one has seen or heard from him since.
He was employed by the owner of the house, Elizabeth Sattaur. He had also visited the property to assist in the installation of surveillance cameras.
The 53-year-old man’s reputed wife, Beverly McTurk, said that she last saw the father of five, three days before the fire when he visited her home to give her money to take their son to the dentist. He informed her that he was going to work on East Coast Demerara and would return in a few days.
McTurk and Ceres were not living together at the time since they had an ongoing case before the court.
“The Wednesday (day before the fire) he called and say that he coming home the night or the next morning and I tell him when he come let him call but I didn’t get a call from him,” the woman stressed.
She said that when he failed to contact her on Thursday (June, 30), she called his phone but the call went straight to voicemail. She was later informed of the fire but never suspected that the burnt corpse might be that of her reputed husband.
Elvin Ceres only worked at the Wales house; he didn’t have keys to the property at the time. However, the police suspect that he might have cut extra keys when he was in possession of the original keys.
They believed that when the fire started, Ceres woke up and panicked. They assumed that he ran into the bathroom to get water but by then, the entire top flat collapsed on him.
A post mortem examination revealed that the person, whose remains lay among the rubble, died from smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire was electrical.
