Akeem “Padlock” Green put a lock on his opponents before riding away to win the ninth annual Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) 50-mile cycle road race held on Sunday on the Corentyne Highway.
The event was held from Corriverton to Adventure and back to its place of Origin.
The race which was organized by the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC) and sponsored by the Bank, began in front of the bank’s Corriverton Branch and saw Green locking off his opponents for a dominant performance to win comfortably in the end from Romello Crawford who placed second.
The race, which was for Berbicians only, saw some 22 cyclist taking to the starting line.
Andrew Hicks rode in third with Jebon Crawford fourth, Brian Harris fifth and ever green Syborne Fernandes sixth.
The juvenile category saw national juvenile champion Zaman Khan continuing his dominance with an easy win with Ralph Seenarine, Alex Burnett and Delwin Bowman rounding out the top placers.
Among the females Tamika Teixeira continued her winning ways as she rode home ahead of Christine Matheson and Whitney Poyer.
The females rode from No.51 Village to the finish line.
There were 12 prime point prizes up for the taking with 10 going to the males and two for the females.
Khan made use of the five minutes head start given to the juveniles to snatch the first four with Green also taking four, while there were one apiece for Hicks and Balram Narine.
The two female prizes went to Teixeira.
Cash incentives were presented to all the top placers while trophies were also presented to the winners of the three categories.
Manager of the Bank’s Corriverton Branch Keiola Blackman sent the cyclists on their journey and assisted in the distribution of the prizes to the respective winners.
The manager in brief remarks said she was pleased with the day’s proceedings and stated that the event was one of many sponsored by the bank in giving back to society and being a good cooperate citizen.
She also thanked the participants for putting on a good show and promised the bank’s continued support in the future.
The event was coordinated by Coach Randolph Roberts.
