After a break yesterday the penultimate day of the WICB Regional Women’s T20 cricket tournament is scheduled for Providence with three matches today including the contest under lights from 19:00hrs between the only two unbeaten teams, Barbados and Jamaica.
Debuts Leewards play the Windwards from 09:00hrs, Guyana battle Trinidad & Tobago from 14:00hrs while last year’s 50-over finalists Barbados and Jamaica, the only two unbeaten teams, go head-to-head in a crucial match-up tonight under lights from 19:00hrs.
Leewards along with the Windwards have lost both of their encounters and are no longer contenders for the title. Guyana & T&T each have a win and a loss while tonight will see either Barbados or Jamaica sail through the preliminary rounds unbeaten unless their game is washed out. In that case both teams will be tied on points but Jamaica, with their superior net run rate, will stay in front.
On day one, Hayley Matthew led Barbados to a 32-run win over 50-over Champions Trinidad & Tobago with Matthews hitting 27 and sharing in a 52-run opening stand with Kycia Knight (23) before Barbados slipped from 75-2 to 106-8 when their 20 overs expired. Leanya Kirby (2-19) and Anisa Mohamed (2-21) were the most successful bowlers for T&T who were bowled out for 74 in 17.2 overs as Matthews had 4-17.
Skipper Stefanie Taylor (64) shared in two half-century stands; with Natasha McClean (21) and 67 with Chedean Nation (29), to lead Jamaica to 148-3 from 20 overs in the second game on Thursday. The Windwards were restricted to 92-5 from 20 overs as Juliana Nero (23) and Skipper Afy Fletcher (19) offered some resistance. Roshana Outar had 2-16.
In the night game, Guyana beat the Windwards by 55-runs as Shemaine Campbelle scored an unbeaten 64 and shared in a 111 second wicket stand with Melanie Henry (34) to see Guyana to 138-2 off their 20 allotted overs.
Skipper Shawnisha Hector took 2-26 for the Windwards who were restricted to 83-9 from 20 overs as left arm pacer Erva Giddings finished with 4-15. On Friday, in the opening game, Shanel Daley had 5-11 as the Leewards crawled to 61-9 from 20 overs with Jenisen Richards and Amanda Edwards both making 16. Jamaica raced to 63-2 from 5.2 overs as Taylor (35) and Jodian Morgan (19) added 51 for the first wicket.
An unbeaten 62 from Barbados Skipper Shaquana Quintyne led her team to a 49-run win against Guyana. Quintyne got support from Kycia Knight (29) and Shamilia Connell (19) as the Bajans galloped to 140-6 from 20 overs. Giddings took 2-34 for Guyana who were 91-5 off 20 overs despite 43 not out from Shemaine Campbelle.
Deandra Dottin took 2-20. In the night match T&T made 134 -4 off 20 overs with Brittany Cooper making 51 and Skipper Merissa Aguilleira 50. Akeria Peters had 3-36 for the Windwards who could only reach 66 in 18.3 overs. Juliana Shayelle Lord, Anisa Mohamed and Karishna Ramharack took two wickets each for T&T in their 73-run victory.
Guyana’s Campbell is the only batter to reach 100 runs, and along with Jamaican Taylor (97 runs), 20-year-old Bajan Quintyne, Aguilleira and Cooper of T&T have each registered a half century while Jamaican left-arm spinner Daley (5-11) has the only five-wicket haul. Guyana’s Giddings and 18-year-old Bajan Hayley Matthews have captured 4-wicket hauls.
Shawnisha Hector, the Leewards Captain, despite her lack hard of ball cricket experience, looks a very promising fast bowling prospect and will hope to help her team to their first ever win in Regional cricket when they the Windwards today.
