Today’s quarter-final round of matches in this year’s Digicel Schools Football Championship promises keen rivalry among the remaining teams.
Reigning champion and four-time title holders Christianburg / Wismar play host to Region 6 champion Tutorial at Wisburg and while the forecast predicts a victory for the champs their opponents should not be underestimated, especially at this stage of the competition.
Very often only the best teams reach this far and heading into a game over confident could be perilous for any team. Christianburg / Wismar is coming off a tough win in a penalty shootout against a stubborn North West Secondary and that narrow escape should provide the impetus for the host to put on a convincing display, especially playing at home in front of what is anticipated to be animated home support.
They should also feel more comfortable with the return of two key players and their Coach Anthony Stephens, who was the Head Coach of the national Under-17 squad. Tutorial on the other hand played impressively to beat Orealla to win the regional title and must be feeling special about their recent performance.
Over at No.5 ground in West Berbice, Region 5 champs Bush Lot tackles Soesdyke Secondary and while not much is known of the two teams, the mere fact that they’ve reached this far means that they possess players of some quality. The Khan brothers will spearhead Soesdyke’s quest for victory.
Over in Lethem, Region 9 champs Annai takes on North Georgetown winners Chase Academic Foundation and this encounter promises to be a sizzler. The host is usually very tough to beat at home and even though Chase Academic Foundation will enjoy the return of their star players from national duty, they will be playing in an environment far from home where the crowd support is extremely unforgiving.
At Bartica, Region 7 title holders DC Caesar Fox (formerly Waramadong) square off against South Georgetown champions Sir Leon. DC Caesar Fox like so many of the teams are going through a rebuilding phase, but this has not stopped them from putting on some exciting performances.
They’ve shown that they will be just as formidable as the other years and will definitely take some doing to be beaten.
On the other hand, Sir Leon possesses players of a high calibre at this level and is capable of creating an upset.
It promises to be an thrilling encounter worthy of seeing.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
