…Gregory Gaskin Memorial Berbice Sports Awards
History was created on Friday last when ten-year-old Patrina Sulivan became the youngest ever awardee of the Gregory Gaskin Memorial / Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, Berbice Sports Award.
The pint sized Sulivan who attends the Auchlyne Primary School was selected by a panel of judges headed by veteran journalist Gregory Rambarran as the Berbice Sportswoman of the Year – 2015 for her outstanding performances at the National Schools Championships.
Sulivan won gold medals in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m races. The other awardees – Berbice Sportsman of the Year – Andrew Hicks (national junior cyclist), Berbice Sports Club of the Year – Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club and Berbice Sports Personality of the Year – Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster in giving the feature address at the presentation ceremony informed that the judges this year concentrated on other sports apart from cricket in an effort to reward others noting that cricketers have dominated the awards in the past.
HE said that most cricketers are professionals who receives huge earnings adding that it was important to recognise others who train daily to achieve success without financial rewards.
The Gregory Gaskin Memorial Berbice Sports Award was established with the main objective of honouring sports personalities and clubs in Berbice which promote sports as an alternative to a life on the road and to identify positive role models to young sportsmen and women.
The Awards also seek to make sure that heroes in Berbice are honoured as the National Sports Commission tends to bypass Berbicians despite success on and off the field in the sporting arena.
Foster, who has spearheaded over 6000 programmes over the past two decades at the RHTY&SC, urged the awardees to uphold the high tradition they have set themselves and to work harder to achieve more in the future.
He also issued a special appeal for other sports organisations to make an effort to make a positive difference in the lives of their members.
He said that youths live in a modern world, where numerous social ills affect their personal development.
A challenge was issued to all major sports clubs and national associations to get involved in social and educational programmes like the RHTY&SC, M.S.
Operations Manager of Sentinel Security Inc., Cedric Browne in brief remarks stated that his company was pleased to be associated with Guyana’s leading club to honour the memory of the late Gregory Gaskin, Founder and CEO of Cops Security Ltd.
Gaskin, he noted was a passionate supporter of sports and someone who strongly believed in using sports as a vehicle to keep youths out of negative activities.
He praised the club for its vision of hosting programmes of such nature which inspire youths.
Like Foster, Browne urged the awardees to uphold their high tradition and to always strive for excellence.
Hicks was honoured for his outstanding performance as a junior cyclist throughout 2015 while Humphrey was recognised for working beyond the call of duty to promote football in the Ancient County.
The Heart of Oak Masters Football Club was recognised for its contributions towards football and for assisting youths to fulfil their potential. Each of the awardees received a trophy, a medal, Certificate of Excellence and a collection of gifts. The Awardees also expressed gratitude to the club and Foster for honouring them while spearheading efforts to promote sports across Berbice.
RHTY&SC thanked Mrs Noreen Gaskin and the Management of the Sentinel Security for their continued sponsorship of the Gregory Gaskin Berbice Sports Awards.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
