The Mayor and City Council is pleased to announce that it will be carrying out critical road repairs; a service it has previously been able to render for almost a decade now. Moreover, the Municipality is advising all stakeholders that road works will commence today at Industrial Site and at the corner of Robb Street and Avenue of the Republic.
For this specific purpose, the mentioned roads will be closed to heavy-duty vehicular traffic. These include single axle heavy duty vehicles, 18-wheelers and other container carriers. The thoroughfares will be resorted to single lane. All are advised to exercise caution, the M&CC said in a statement issued yesterday.
Despite having to make the repairs with the meager funds currently held by the city, the Council said that it is necessary to carry out these works now. “Many of the City road ways have deteriorated from the constant fatigue from heavy duty vehicles. Visits to the Industrial Site location have proven that the road there is almost impassable, with huge potholes, large stones and the complete erosion of the road surface. Residents living within the vicinity of Industrial Site, as well as parents of the children of the Council’s child care centre, have expressed concern over the poor mobility in that area,” the Council related in its statement.
At the junction of Robb Street and Avenue of the Republic, the Council will repair the railing that borders the bridge there. This railing has been uprooted and continues to be bent out of shape when container carriers brace it while turning off Robb Street onto the Avenue, the Council has observed.
Added to this, it was noted that during the day, there is a large buildup of traffic on that corner, sometimes as a result of heavy duty vehicles trying to maneuver through dense traffic.
“The Council will widen this narrow road to allow for better traffic flow,” the statement outlined.
The Municipal body believes that the improvement of city roads will ultimately improve traffic management and reduce road accidents. Several other roads will be repaired by the Council. These include sections of Water Street, Regent Street, Campbellville, the Kitty area, among others. These too would be closed to certain traffic during those repairs.
According to the statement, “the City regrets any inconvenience caused to all affected, but urges that road safety remains another priority of the city. Large commercial/container vehicles are reminded of the legally designated streets to be used and the designated 6:00pm to 6:00am, operating time; this will be reinforced by the city Constabulary.”
The road work programme is part of the Council’s wider road and city management programme where certain measures are being put in place to promote smooth mobility in Georgetown.
The road work is also part of an even wider programme to reorganize and improve the capital with better waste management functioning, social and recreational improvement and job creation among other services.
The Mayor and City Council thanks all citizens for their patience and continued support towards a “clean and green” city.
