The Ministry of Social Cohesion, through the Office of the Presidency, in collaboration with the Regional Department of Education, presented the top Region Seven performers in the Annual Grade Six Assessment 2016 with bicycles and book bags. The occasion was at the St. John the Baptist Primary School.
The top performers were Romel Smith (526) St. John the Baptist Primary, Corena Clementson (500) St. Anthony’s Primary; Indrani Vanlange (493) St. Anthony’s Primary; Amyeda Clement (488) Jawalla Primary; Navin Baboolall (485) High Achievers Institute; Victoria Outridge (482) St. John the Baptist Primary; Michael Cameron (481) St. John the Baptist Primary; Anil Jerry (477) Jawalla Primary; Nixon Williams (477) Two Miles Primary; and Dino Chambers (476) Paruima Primary.
Each student received a bicycle and a book bag from the Ministry of Social Cohesion.
Region Seven Education Officer, Mr. Charles Holmes congratulated the students. He urged parents and teachers that from this year, there will be no more drilling because the exam is designed for critical thinking.
He urged teachers to review their strategies to cater to the new examination design. “Congratulations to parents who worked so hard and the school Heads and all persons for grooming our future leaders. The Department of Education places emphasis for children to learn and for them to excel. I have no doubt that these children will excel in their future endeavors. I will be listening in the future for good things.”
He expressed his gratitude to the Ministry for the donated school bus that makes four trips a day. The Ministry has also made provision of a school boat for Goshen, Essequibo River and footwear to all the schools.
The Department of Education has purchased two 150 Hp engines and a shaded school boat to be available from September for the riverain children. These initiatives are to boost attendance from the riverain and far flung areas. He charged the top performers, “You who are here have just started (your journey). Continue studying ahead”.
Regional Chairman, Gordon Bradford, outlined to those present that the initiative of the “Bs” is President Granger’s with support from corporate Guyana.
He said, “The President has interest in the people and he wants to give them the opportunity to qualify themselves. You have made this region proud. We want parents to give a little attention to children. We at the administrative level want to see value for money. We want you parents to be active in the child’s performance.
“The President has opted to provide transportation for children. Our Region is the most difficult to administer. Congratulations to all the students who passed the grade (6) exams.”
The Ministry of Social Cohesion Representative, Shabbir Ali, expressed his thanks to the Regional Education Officer for his input in the Ministry’s initiatives. He informed all present that to date the donations have been 10 school buses, nine boats and nearly 500 bicycles.
