A policeman accused of accepting $350,000 in gold as bribe was released on $75,000 bail, after he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan charged with corruptly obtaining money.
Corporal Ronald Fraser, 43, of Supenaam Creek, Pomeroon is accused of accepting an ounce of raw gold; three penny weight of raw gold and two penny weight of raw gold from Mark Williamson to forbear to investigate him for the offence of narcotic (cannabis sativa) possession between February 1 and February 20 at Ekereku.
He pleaded not guilty.
Fraser who is stationed at the Ekereku Police Station was instructed to make his next court appearance on September 19, in the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court.
The defendant was represented by Attorney Dexter Todd, who asked for his client to be released on self bail. Todd highlighted that prior to his client’s court appearance he was on active duty. Further, the Attorney stated that Williamson is also a police officer stationed at the aforementioned police station. He added that Williamson was under his client’s supervision when the offence allegedly occurred.
The lawyer said that the matter has since engaged the attention of the GPF Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
Police Corporal, Deniro Jones represented the prosecution and had no objections to his colleague being released on bail.
