Concerns ranging from impassable roads to a constantly malfunctioning water distribution system have spurred residents of Port Kaituma, Region One to protest action. The residents are gearing for a protest on Tuesday.
They reported that the decision to retaliate follows on the heels of a meeting they attended with the Regional Executive Officer and Regional Chairman, both of whom seem incapable of putting measures in place to address their concerns.
The residents said that they had anticipated that with the Local Government Elections they would have seen needed changes undertaken by the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC). Instead they said that those placed in authority have left them in their former predicament.
“We the people of Port Kaituma need to know why our simple needs are not being taken care of…our roads are getting worse every day with the heavy rains,” informed one resident.
The resident even disclosed that the people of Port Kaituma are being told by officials of the Region that Government is to be blamed for the lack of intervention. “They are blaming everything on Government,” said a resident who lamented that the deplorable condition of the main road at Citrus Grove, Port Kaituma has even caused bus drivers to hike their fares.
This publication was informed that while the fare structure required that adults pay $200, secondary school students $100, primary pupils $60 and nursery children $40, the bus drivers have decided to increase all fares. Adults are expected to pay $300, secondary students $200 while primary and nursery age children are asked to pay $100.
The residents are complaining that many of them can barely make ends meet and are therefore frustrated that those who they elected into power are doing nothing to improve their lives. “They are asking us to do self help to do everything…they want us to do self help to fix the road because they don’t intend to do anything for us,” the residents complained.
