On Monday June 12, last, residents of Number Thirty Village, West Coast Berbice, staged protest actions over the flood which had been affecting them since April. The water level did drop, but then it rose again and continued to remain on the land.
Residents were uncomfortable; they were losing crops as well as livestock. The frustration led to protest action. The residents blocked the only thoroughfare linking Berbice and Georgetown.
The authorities in the Region immediately went into action deploying machinery to get the water off the land. Last week, a team of officials led by Vice President Khemraj Ramjattan visited the area and interacted with the residents.
Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, at the helm, distributed materials advising residents on how to deal with flood-related health issues. The health team also distributed bleach together with one treated mosquito net per family. The distribution of the mosquito nets, however, did not go according to plan. As far as the distribution team was concerned, the nets were intended for the flood stricken residents.
A request was made for 60 mosquito nets for the Hugo Chavez Shelter located at Onverwagt, and the officers directly involved with the distribution were taken by surprise. Carol Joseph, who made the request, was asked to allow the staff to treat with the residents in the line.
That did not go down well with Joseph, the representative of the Hugo Chavez Center. It took a few attempts by Mr. Neilson McKenzie to get Councillor Carol Joseph to calm down even though the officers had eventually begun processing her request.
