Candidate Master, Anthony Drayton, started on a winning note and defeated Frankie Farley when the curtains went up on the ‘Andrew Arts Memorial’ Chess Championships at the National Resource Center, Woolford Avenue, Saturday morning.
Another CM, Taffin Khan, emulated Drayton with a similar performance against Ryan Goliath while Woman CM, Maria Verona Gonsalves added her name to the winning team with a victory over Jason Wills.
Senior National Champion, Wendell Meusa, did not enroll for the tournament which also saw Ryan Singh winning from Jessica Callender and Rashad Hussain triumphing over Saeed Alli.
HaiFeng Su returned after a short absence from competitive chess to defeat veteran player, Errol Tiwari, while other results saw Joshua Pedro prevailing over Shazeeda Rahim and Roberto Neto winning from Shariffa Ali.
This is a FIDE-rated tournament and activities continue next Saturday afternoon where the players will engage in another two rounds before culminating activities on Sunday with another two rounds. The tournament is sponsored by Andrew Arts and the Guyana Chess Federation has expressed its gratitude to that entity for its generous patronage.
