A Corentyne woman was yesterday placed on remand after being charged with Neglect of her child contrary to Section 28(A) of the Summary Jurisdiction Offenses Act, Chapter 8:02.
Due to the serious nature of the offense, the matter was held in-camera, therefore members of the public were not allowed inside the court room.
The 38-year-old accused appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge read to her by Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh.
The charge states that between Saturday 18th June, 2016 and Sunday 19th June, 2016 at Kingston, Corriverton, she willfully neglected her 3-year-old daughter in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to her health. The unrepresented woman is said to be an alleged alcoholic.
According to the facts given, the woman, on the day in question went on a drinking spree with her friends and returned home at 20:30 hrs where she retired to bed with her children. She reportedly awoke at around 01:30 hrs to discover her 3-year-old daughter missing from the bed. Upon checking, she discovered the child lying on the floor bleeding from her privates.
The toddler was taken to the Springlands Police Station. Her mother was advised to take the child to hospital, where a medical examination confirmed sexual assault.
The child was then rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where she underwent emergency surgery and currently remains a patient.
The woman was not required to plea to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until next Monday, June 27th.
The male friend of the mother was released on $100,000 bail on Wednesday as investigations continue.
