An incident yesterday has left a Roraima Airways aircraft damaged and an engineer in the hospital.
According to the company in a statement, the incident occurred at its hangar at Eugene F. Correia International Airport, Ogle, East Coast Demerara facilities.
“The affected Britten-Norman Trislander aircraft was on the ground in the hangar, undergoing a routine maintenance inspection at the time. It suffered damage to the right wing,” the statement said.
One of company’s engineers suffered burns to his hands and a fractured ankle.
“He is currently stable and resting in hospital. Roraima Airways will do all in its power to ensure he is comfortable and receives the best medical care. Please join with us in praying for his speedy and complete recovery.”
According to the company, an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident is currently underway by both its Maintenance Quality Department and the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority.
“We wish to praise the heroic efforts of our staff who responded aggressively as trained, using the fire-fighting equipment in the hangar, negating any further injury or damage.”
The company said it is currently arranging counseling for the maintenance team and all team members affected.
An official of the company yesterday said it is too early to describe the incident as an explosion.
He said that the investigations will determine what it is.
“While the temporary inability to use the aircraft is difficult for us, our flight operations will suffer no significant disruption,” Roraima Airways said in the statement.
Roraima is one of several companies operating at the airport.
