Around 15:20hrs yesterday, a prison search was conducted at the New Amsterdam Prison
during which several items were confiscated from inmates.
According to a source last evening, 12 cellular phones; 20 grammes of marijuana; six “jukers”; two tattoo machines; a quantity of lighters; eight packets of cigarettes; four cellular phone batteries; three improvised chargers; one sim card; a quantity of razor blades and a bucket of homemade wine were confiscated.
Finding inmates with prohibited items has somewhat become a norm in Guyana. The Camp Street jail riot, which claimed the lives of 17 inmates earlier this year was said to have allegedly stemmed from the inmates’ “comforts” being taken away during a search.
