Competition in the Annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament continues Sunday with a triple header card at the Victoria Ground on The East Coast of Demerara as the tournament has reached its last 16 teams.
Sunday’s action will see BV Triumph taking on Police from 5:00pm in the curtain raiser, while in game number 2 from 7:00pm, Ann’s Grove challenge Grove Hi Tech. The nightcap from 9:00pm will feature a clash between homsters Victoria kings against Federal Winners Connection of Linden in a meeting of the respective area champions.
The tournament is down to its last 16 teams following latest competition. Those through are Camptown, Santos, Pouderoyen, beavers, Cougars, Riddim Squad, Western Tigers, Den Amstel, Uitvlugt and Eagles of Linden.
Last Sunday’s action saw BV Triumph overcoming Mahaica on penalty kicks 4-2 after their contest ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time. The other game stayed true to form as it took penalties to separate Cougars and Golden Grove after the game ended 2-2. Cougars won 5-3 on kicks.
The teams are competing for the Mayor’s Cup and a first prize of $700,000 donated by Aruwai Resort, second $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, third $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy and fourth $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team. The tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
The event is coordinated by Lennox Arthur, former National footballer and later Coach, who has been behind this tournament for 22 years.
